4 Signs Your Roof Decking Is Damaged

Roof decking, or sheathing, is the supporting structure underneath your shingles. Roofers nail your shingles onto the decking so that they remain secure regardless of the weather. Roof decking is typically made from high-quality plywood or OSB.

While roof decking is made to withstand the elements, it can still get damaged for various reasons. When this happens, it’s best to replace the material instead of trying to repair it.

Here are four signs your roof decking is damaged.

1. Water Damage

Sheathing materials typically use wood and wood-based composite boards. They’re strong when dry, but prolonged exposure to water can weaken them. After getting soaked in water, the sheathing becomes susceptible to wood rot, which significantly decreases its strength and integrity.

2. Sagging Roofline

A sagging roofline is a clear indication your sheathing is damaged or weak. If your roof has started to look wavy or rippled, better call your roofer to have it inspected.

3. Mold Growth

Mold grows due to high humidity and moisture on the sheathing. If your attic has poor ventilation, this can worsen the problem and cause the wooden material to absorb and retain water. This can eventually lead to wood rot and accelerate the deterioration of your roofing system.

4. Flashing Damage

Flashing strips ensure no water passes through the gaps between the roofing materials and roof protrusions, such as chimneys, attic vents and skylights. Rusted and damaged flashing indicates water damage, which has likely spread to your roof decking.

To address these issues in the roof decking, experts will recommend the replacement of the material. Typically, when the sheathing is damaged, it means the shingles are also compromised. That said, roofers usually replace the shingles and roof decking at the same time. This is to ensure that the new shingles have a strong base that will keep them secure no matter the weather.
