5 Signs You Need New Siding

Typical siding materials do not exhibit obvious signs such as leaks when they need to be replaced. But just because it looks fine doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pay attention to your siding. The following are some of the signs you will need to have them replaced soon.

  1. Warped Siding – This is a common sign with plastic-based siding like vinyl and plastic, and is due to continued exposure to sunlight. If you notice your siding isn’t ruler-straight anymore, you should look for other signs.

  1. Your Siding Needs Repainting Too Often – Traditional siding like wood needs a fresh coat of paint every three to seven years. Newer materials like fiber cement that came without factory coating can last as long as 15 years without a repaint. If your siding paint job won’t last for more than a couple of years without chipping, peeling or cracking, it means the material has deteriorated to the point where it can’t hold paint well. Consider siding with factory-applied colors, such as James Hardie® fiber cement siding. The money you save from not buying paints and tools (or from not hiring a paint contractor) can instead be put toward a minor kitchen remodeling project.

  1. High Energy Bills – Siding is part of your home’s exterior wall, and contributes to its insulative properties. Properly insulated enclosures require far less cooling and consume less energy. If your energy bills tend to spike during summer and winter, your siding may be contributing to the problem. Also consider having your siding inspected by a BPI-certified energy auditor to pinpoint possible energy-efficiency issues.

  1. Rotten and Cracked Siding – This is one of the more noticeable signs, especially from the curb. Sanding, scraping, and repainting may help fix the look, but don’t expect your siding to last long at this state.

  1. Dry Rot – Dry rot isn’t as visible as rotting or cracking since it usually starts under the siding layer. If you suspect dry rot, take a long screwdriver or a similar tool and tap it firmly. If rotten parts fall out, then dry rot has already set in.
