Every year, so many homeowners invest in roof replacement either because of their system’s old age or damage caused by the last storm. This is the reason roofing experts recommend performing an in-depth inspection on roofs at least twice a year.
Roofing shingles experience aging differently, so it can sometimes be tricky to know how long they will last. With storm chasers targeting unaware homeowners after major weather events, it’s crucial that you arm yourself with information on what type of aging factor is normal and what isn’t. NorthWest Construction, your trusted roofing, siding and bathroom remodeling contractor, shares what you need to know.
What is Normal?
As with any other home component, aging is natural for roofs, and it starts the moment they are exposed to the elements. Here are a few signs of aging shingles:
Curling – As shingles age, they shrink with time. This often results in a slight curling of the shingle edge.
Minor cracks – As long as the cracks don’t penetrate through the shingles and the roof continues to perform its function, then it’s not cause for alarm.
Black streaks – This should not serve as a red flag because the dark streaks are the result of algae growth, which means they don’t affect your roof’s ability to shed water.
What Isn’t Normal?
Some roof wear, on the other hand, could indicate a potential extensive issue, and should be examined immediately. These include:
Blisters – They can be the result of under-ventilated attics or excessive use of plastic cement. While closed blisters are generally safe, open ones eventually expose your roof to water penetration.
Buckling – Buckled or distorted shingles are often caused by inadequate roof ventilation, or roof deck damage.
Excessive granule loss – While a bit of granule loss doesn’t require attention, excessive loss can expose the shingle layer, and is therefore a reason for concern.
