Questions to Ask Your Gutter Installer

There are several reasons to call a gutter contractor. Whether you’re building a new home or replacing old gutters, you need professionals to handle the gutter system installation. The same is true if you’re working on a bathroom remodeling project in which you’re building out and the roof has to be expanded.

Whatever the reason for needing a gutter installer, it’s important to ask them a few questions to ensure they’re installing exactly what you need. Here are some relevant questions:

What Material Should I Choose?

There are several materials that work well when used in making gutters. In the 80s, galvanized steel was the industry standard because it was easy to install even for a regular sheet metal worker. It was highly malleable so shaping it was straightforward. However, because of its tendency to decay and corrode after some time, it fell out of favor.

Aluminum is currently the industry standard. It’s easily “rolled” (formed) using a gutter machine on-site, and it stays durable over a long period of time because of its ability to resist corrosion.

If money is no object, take a look at copper. It’s beautiful, and copper gutters get even more beautiful as they develop that patina over time. If you install copper gutters, you might never need to replace them ever again.

Think about how your gutters will look alongside other exterior areas of your home, such as your roof and your siding.

Do You Install Sectional/Seamed or Seamless Gutters?

Sectional gutters are the most common type of gutters because they are easier to install than seamless gutters. Your gutters will be installed section by section. These gutters also cost less.

However, if you want gutters that are a perfect fit for your roofline, then seamless gutters are better. Your installer will fashion them for your home on-site, using a special machine.

Seamless gutters look better than sectional or seamed gutters. They are less likely to get clogged by debris because there are fewer places where debris can get stuck. Thanks to this feature, seamless gutters also tend to last longer.

Will You Provide a Warranty?

Good-quality gutters from reputable manufacturers usually come with a warranty if installed by a professional. Reputable contractors may also back up their workmanship with a separate warranty.

Warranties are your protection against manufacturing defects and workmanship errors, so make sure you clear this up with your gutter installer.
