What Do Roofers Do If It Rains During Installation?

Unlike bathroom remodeling or other kinds of interior renovation work, roof installation needs to be done when the weather is clear, as there will be less chance of moisture getting trapped under the waterproofing barriers. But sometimes, rain may fall unexpectedly during roof installation, and in today’s post, Northwest Construction shares an overview of what roofing installers do in such situations.

Roof Coverings

Knowledgeable roofers like us know more than just roof installation procedures. We are trained and equipped to protect the roof in case it rains. We use large tarpaulins to quickly cover the unfinished roof. Since most of the roofing components are designed to withstand mist and outdoor humidity, the only thing we need to prevent is direct contact between rainwater and the layers under the roof.

Safety Training and Equipment

While covering the roof sounds like a simple task, covering such a large area within the shortest time possible is not easy. Add to that the risks of injury posed by slippery surfaces caused by the rain, and difficult becomes dangerous. Fortunately, we also have the safety training and equipment such as harnesses to minimize safety risks, as well as accidental damage to the roof and siding.

Treated Materials

Today’s standard roofing materials used for building the roof framing and decking are treated for moisture resistance. Untreated materials tend to absorb moisture, either from direct contact or from increased humidity, which results in warping, delamination and rot. Such problems are far less likely to happen to treated materials, even with slight exposure to rainwater.

After the Rain

Once the weather clears, our team will thoroughly inspect the roof and make sure the unfinished roof is dry before they continue. Unused material, including asphalt shingles, are likewise inspected. Wet shingles are not ideal for use, as their adhesive may not cure properly.

You might be worried that this will delay the project. While there will be slight delays, we usually take them into account when calculating the expected completion date. This means we still get to finish our projects on time most of the time, barring extremely unusual circumstances.
