3 Things You Should Do to Prevent Roof Damage This Winter

Wintertime can be very tough on your roofing system, no matter how durable it is. Heavy snowfall and winter storms will take a toll on your roof, especially if you do not prepare for them. To avoid an expensive roof repair bill from your roofer this winter, here are three things that you can do to prevent it from being damaged in the first place.

1. Clear Your Roof

The first thing you should do is clear away any debris from your roof. Branches and leaves do a pretty good job of retaining moisture. If you leave them sitting on your roof, this moisture can find its way under your asphalt shingles or tiles. While cleaning your roof, be on the lookout for depressions or crevices where water can pool.

2. Clean Your Gutters

Clogs in your gutters are sure to lead to standing water pooling inside them. When this happens, mold and mildew growth will not be too far behind. Water in your gutters can also freeze when the mercury drops. The additional weight can put a tremendous strain on your gutter system and, if your gutters are not securely fastened, can cause them to detach from the side of your house.

3. Prepare for Emergencies

Winter roofing emergencies are common in some parts of the country. Even if you live in a climate that does not have very harsh winters, it is never a bad idea to prepare for them. Be sure to have the contact information of a trusted local roofer that can perform emergency repairs during winter close at hand should disaster strike.
