4 Common Attic Ventilation Myths You Should Stop Believing

Attic ventilation is essential to every roofing system, yet not everyone understands how it works, or why every capable roofing contractor insists on its importance. Allow our experts at NorthWest Construction to clear the confusion and debunk some of these myths and misconceptions.

MYTH: More Ventilation Means Better

Attic ventilation has to be just right: not too much, and not too little. The purpose of attic ventilation is to vent out unwanted heat and moisture, keeping the attic closer to the outdoor temperatures. Too little ventilation results in slow circulation that traps heat and moisture in the attic, which can damage attic insulation as well as cause structural damage to the roof.

Trapped heat in the attic also causes ice dams in winter, which is a sizable problem in itself. On the other hand, too much ventilation makes the roof vulnerable to blowouts during storms. A capable roofing contractor calculates the required attic ventilation and includes it into the final roof design.

MYTH: You Only Need Attic Ventilation If You Live in Warm Climates

Attic ventilation is needed regardless of climate or location. In addition to the aforementioned ice dams, an attic filled with warm and moist air is the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow. The spores can spread to your indoor space and cause respiratory problems and trigger allergies. If you suspect you have mold and mildew problem, you may need to schedule roof repair as soon as possible.

MYTH: Attic Ventilation Allows Indoor Heat Leaks

A well-insulated attic will not allow indoor heat to leak and affect your home’s energy efficiency. Most residential attics have insulation installed on the attic floor, so the ideal attic temperature should be more or less the same as the outdoors. This also helps the roofing structure keep its shape. If the roof structure is exposed to different temperatures at the same time, it could lead to warping.

MYTH: You Can DIY Attic Ventilation

Even if you could, you shouldn’t. It’s not as simple as installing a vent. As we mentioned earlier, attic ventilation requirements have to be carefully calculated, which has to be done by someone with the training and know-how. Plus, dismantling your roof and installing ventilation vents yourself could void your roofing warranty.
