4 Key Questions to Ask a Prospective Roofing Contractor

One of the ingredients of a successful roofing project is choosing the right roofing contractor. In today’s post, Northwest Construction helps you screen prospective contractors with these questions you should be asking them before you make your choice.

1. Are you licensed and insured? In most states, any contractor doing roofing work is required to register or have a license. In Michigan, a state license is issued by the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, under the category of Residential Maintenance and Alteration (M&A). A prospective roofing contractor should have no problem providing a copy of their license and certificate of insurance. The latter should clearly indicate coverage for general liability insurance and workers’ compensation.

2. Do you have a manufacturer designation? Roofing manufacturers provide a designation or certification to roofing contractors who pass factory training and various other requirements. A roofer with a manufacturer designation is authorized to offer products — including complete roofing systems and warranty coverage — from the manufacturer they represent. As a homeowner, this is your assurance that only authentic products will be used, and that you will be eligible for warranty coverage. Northwest Construction is proudly designated as a GAF Master Elite® contractor.

3. What is the scope of your work? A prospective roofer should be able to explain the scope of your roofing project. Details such as the extent of roofing work, expected timeframe, and whether additional work will be done to adjacent areas such as the gutters. This roofer should demonstrate a clear understanding of your goals, which would make them less likely to commit mistakes.

4. Do you want me to sign now? A good roofing contractor shouldn’t expect a client to sign the quote as soon as possible. Rather, you should be given enough time to review the contract’s terms and conditions and correct mistakes if needed. Unscrupulous contractors employ pressure tactics like giving discounts if you sign within an unreasonably short time — consider this a red flag and move on to considering a better contractor.
