A roof is more than just the shingles or tiles. Actually, it is made up of several important components that all work together to protect what’s underneath it. However, if you are like most people, you are probably not too familiar with all the parts that make up your roof, especially the stuff that’s underneath. In today’s post, a trusted roofing contractor tells us what roofing underlayment is and explains why it is so important
Why Is Roofing Underlayment So Important?
Your roof’s underlayment is a water-resistant or waterproof barrier that is installed underneath all the other roofing materials, thus the term. It’s main purpose is to serve as the final layer of protection from the weather, particularly water damage. In other words, it is the final obstacle that water has to overcome before being able to infiltrate your home’s interior.
The Three Types of Roofing Underlayment
-
Asphalt-Saturated. This type of underlayment used to be the go-to underlayment material for roof repair and installation contractors up until about 15 years ago. While they are still a popular option due to its availability and affordability, most homeowners and contractors now prefer synthetic materials.
-
Non-Bitumen Synthetic. This has replaced asphalt-saturated underlayment as the underlayment of choice. It offers better water resistance because it is designed for full application on the entire roof.
-
Rubberized Asphalt. Rubberized asphalt can be considered the premium option as it offers complete water protection, unlike the firt two options mentioned above. It has a protective membrane that creates a natural seal between it and the roof deck.
