Post-Storm Inspections: 3 Ways to Safely Inspect Your Roof

Storm damage can result from anything from billowing winds to torrential rain. The damage it can do to your home is significant and the roof takes the brunt of the damage. It’s important to check the structure for signs of damage, but actually doing so requires some strategy.

Northwest Construction, your local roofing contractor, shares three ways to safely inspect your roof after a storm.

Check for Damaged Flashings

These thin metal or asphalt strips protect the most vulnerable parts of the roof, such as the chimneys and joints, from water and physical damage. These flashings are among the first things to get damaged by a storm, and while it’s rare for them to get torn off completely, a storm can bend or detach them.

Apart from damaged flashings, the roof will require immediate roof repair if the shingles show signs of cracking or curling, or if there are dark spots where the roofing granules used to be.

Attic Inspection

The attic is a good starting point to begin your post-storm inspection. Starting here also shows you how damage to the roof can and will extend to other parts of your home.

Warning signs to check in this part of your home include visible leaks. These are easy to spot just after the storm as they are still leaking, but you can also tell by the sunlight entering the attic. Watch out for dark stains and streaks and areas of the roof that seem to be sagging. These are all warning signs that the roof has sustained considerable water damage and is now affecting the wooden structures of the roof.
