Post-Storm Roof Inspection Safety

Spring is a beautiful season. However, it also brings with it its own challenges, especially when a storm blows in and damages your roof. Obviously, when your roof is damaged you’ll need to hire a roofing contractor to fix things for you but before you do that, there’s no doubt you’ll want to see for yourself how bad the damage is on your home’s first line of defense.

In this article, NorthWest Construction invites you to learn about how to safely inspect your roof after a storm and what kind of damage you should look out for.

The Post-Storm Safety Inspection

When going up your roof to assess for roof repair, it’s best that you stay alert. Start on the inside first by checking your attic and look for the telltale signs of damage, such as holes or water stains. If you’re done with that, you can move on outside. Normally, you can see your entire roof at ground level and if you can, you may simply walk around the house and search for signs of damage, such as missing shingles, dark patches, debris, and so on.

If you really need to get up there, make sure your ladder is secure. After all, getting up the ladder only to have it break on you halfway through is a recipe for disaster. You also need to make sure the weather conditions are in your favor. Once you’re up there, look out for loose nails and gutter debris.

Sagging Gutters

Probably one of the first things you’ll see if you go out to inspect the damage, is if your gutters were damaged then it’s most likely your roof was damaged as well. Notable culprits of the damage will most likely be branches from nearby trees or strong winds.

Yard Litter

If there’s debris in your yard, walk around a bit and see if there are any parts of the roof that flew down to give you an idea of the extent of the damage to your roof.

Roof Debris

When looking for roof debris, you’ll most likely see it from ground level. In most cases, though, you’ll probably need a ladder to get up there and see if there are any more debris to find. If there’s anyting very large, you’ll need to call for help.

Granule Loss

These can usually be seen at points of impact after a hail storm and are usually accompanied by surface depression. This is jarring as the loss of mineral granules can lead to the asphalt coating being exposed to the elements, which can lead to the shingle’s accelerated aging.
