Roof Decking: Reasons Why Replacement Is Better Than Repair

Roofs are an extremely important part of your home. They work 24/7 to provide shelter for you and your family and add protection to your house’s structure. But roofs are more than just blocks of wood and shingles, some underlying structures and layers make up this whole functioning system, and roof decking is one of them. What is a roof deck? Why is it better to replace it than repair it? Roof repair expert Northwest Construction is here to help!

Roof Decking

To begin, you must have a grasp of what roof decking is. Decking (also known as sheathing) is a layer of plywood or other composite material that is placed between the support structures of your roof and the shingles. Think of it like a skateboard, where the support structures are the wheels and the metal parts, and the shingles are the rough surface where you stand on. This decking layer is made up of panels and serves as the anchoring point for the shingles, where they are nailed into place.

Moisture Problems

Moisture problems are by far the biggest enemy of roof decks. Since decking is primarily made with organic materials like wood and strands, they are susceptible to the effects of rain, snow and ice. These external elements can cause moisture buildup in places around your roof, especially in your decking, and cause rot to settle in. Rotting deck panels cause leaks and eventually cause collapsing sections in your roof. One of the best ways to prevent this is to have your trusted roofing contractor make regular inspections of your roof.

Why Replace Than Repair

Most of the time, roof decking is damaged by rot and moisture damage. Having them repaired is not only inefficient but it’s also not cost-effective in the long term. Even if only a few panels of your roofing deck have been rotted away, all of the panels must be replaced, since the whole layer itself is already compromised. Repairing only restores the condition of one section, leaving the other parts weakened and will eventually need to be repaired as well. Instead of repairing section by section, simply replace everything as a whole! It saves time and money in the long run, not to mention it also deals with everything in one schedule.
