Why Do Asphalt Shingle Roofs Blister?

Every roofing system has its set of problems and for asphalt shingles, blistering is quite as common as they come. With more than 16 years industry experience, NorthWest Construction is the roofing contractor in the know when it comes to understanding roofing systems, particularly when it comes to understanding why asphalt shingle roofs blister. Having worked on countless residential and commercial properties, we have come across two main reasons for the issue in question:

  1. Trapped Moisture in the Shingles

In some cases, the manufacturing process allows for moisture to get trapped within the shingle itself. This trapped moisture leads to blistering because as the sun heats up the shingles the trapped moisture heats up as well, which can cause blisters to rise up on the shingle.

         2. Poorly Ventilated Roofs

A roof that does not have an adequate ventilation system in place means it can easily get too hot for shingles. This intense heat causes blistering in the shingles. That’s why when it comes to roof inspections we also make sure to examine the state of the attic, as poor ventilation is one of the main reasons for roof repair.

Blister Prevention and Management

Proper installation and routine maintenance are the best defenses against blistering shingles. Even in situations where there are already blisters on the roof, they won’t really cause much problems, as long they keep their granules. Through proper maintenance, you can make sure this remains the case for several years, until such a time when constant wear and exposure to the elements will cause the blisters to pop.
